A gunfire attack at a nightclub in Oslo early Saturday is being investigated as terrorism and Norwegian authorities raised the terror alert to the highest level, according to media reports.
The attack left two people dead and more than 20 wounded, the Associated Press reported.
It occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday at London Pub, a nightclub in the center of the Norwegian capital, and in the surrounding area, Norway’s leading newspaper, Aftenposten, reported. London Pub is well-known as a popular gay nightclub, Aftenposten said, and the shooting occurred the night before Oslo was set to celebrate its Pride festival, including a Saturday parade. The parade was cancelled at the advice of police, the AP reported.
The Norwegian Police Security Service called the attack an “extreme” act of terror and said the suspect had a “long history of violence and threats,” as well as mental health issues, according to the AP.
The security service raised its terror alert level to “extraordinary” — the highest level — after the attack, the AP reported.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the shooting as a bias crime.
“I am shocked by the heinous attack on innocent people in Oslo,” von der Leyen tweeted. “No one should have to fear for their life or well-being simply for who they are. My heart reaches out to the families and friends of the victims.”
